The Faux Leather Trend
Styling this seasons hottest trend! Whether you
are wearing the look head to toe in a hi/lo maxi or just experimenting with
touches of faux leather accessories, here are some key styling tips to having
fun with this look, and yet remaining a fashion DO!
In a dress
When wearing a
statement piece like a faux leather dress, have fun with your shoes and
accessories. Mix up the textures! Pair a hot faux leather mini dress with a
great pair of studded heels, or shoes made from a different material (faux
suede, velvet, studs, crystals, satin, etc.). Depending on the shape, cut, and
volume of the dress, pair with fun, colorful, statement jewelry!
In a pant, skirt or shorts
Structure and fit is key with faux leather pants, legging, or shorts. You can experiment a bit more with the shape and structure of a faux leather skirt. Black faux leather skinnies (jeans or leggings) are a perfect base to any outfit! You have so much room to play with tops (colors and textures) and accessories. Balance of textures, I believe, is key. I love to pair a great pair of structure faux leather skinnies with a blousy, silk chiffon top. The contrast of feminine and masculine is just so sexy! For a more relaxed look, pair your skinnies, leggings, shorts, or skirt with your favorite ripped up rocker tee. You can never go wrong with a modern take on such a classic look. Update this look with your shoes and accessories!
In a bralet, top, jacket or vest
As with accessories,
donning faux leather in a top, vest, or jacket, is a great way to test the
waters with the trend. Everyone (men and women), should own a great structured,
faux leather jacket. Whether in black or brown, that is up to you, but these
are classic pieces that transition well in any wardrobe.
Want to mix two of this
season’s hottest trends in one piece? Try a peplum top in faux leather. Peplums
are one of the most flattering shapes on all women. For a great fit look for a
peplum top that starts at the smallest part of your waist and stops just above
your low hip. Pair with a great pencil skirt, or skinny jeans.
Want to add a bit of sexy to any look with just a touch of faux leather? Try a
peekaboo bralet. For the daring fashionistas take this look out on its own
paired with a highwaisted skirt… For those who just want a touch of this sexy
look, pair under a chiffon blouse or with and off the shoulder tunic.
In accessories
Whether in gloves,
headbands, belts, earrings, scarves, or shoes, accessories are an area to
completely experiment in! Try it all: studded, ruffled, zipped, pinned, etc.
But remember, you want to keep this look a fashion Do… Not a fashion Don’t! The
last thing you want to do, is look like you were playing dress up and forget to
change before leaving the house! Remember the classic words of Coco Chanel, "Before
you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory".
A safe bet is to keep it to pairing bracelets, when wearing bold earrings; and
rings, when wearing bold necklaces.
Care for your faux leather pieces: Hand wash with a gently dish soap. Do not ring out. Hang dry. Steam if necessary.
